17 May 2007: Under Secretary of State – Home Office, Vernon Coker visits SAZ/Positive Futures. Beverley Hughes (Minister for Children, Schools and Families) also accompanied Vernon Coker to see for themselves the work being carried out by both organisations in the SAZ Area. The visit was a great success with the ministers able to meet staff, young people and local voluntary sectors groups to discuss current  programmes and  issues in the community. The visit will be followed up with ongoing contact with both Ministers and their individual departments over the next few months

15 May 2007: HRH The Princess Royal commends past achievements. Four years after it began North Lambeth and North Southwark Sport Action Zone (SAZ) and Positive Futures Lambeth and Southwark launched its extended programme at a high profile event held at Lilian Baylis old School and attended by HRH The Princess Royal.

They now plan to work with young people in the south of the borough of Lambeth after a huge success with the existing programme.

In the four years between 2002-2006 SAZ / Positive Futures have worked on the Aylesbury Estate in partnership with local authorities including Aylesbury New Deal for Communities, London Active Communities, the arts project INSPIRE, the local youth service team and local sports and club development organisation Hat Trick. A groundbreaking and sustained partnership approach has delivered dramatic results to the young people and to the community, as well as securing a firm foundation for future funding.

Through a mixture of presentations, activities and displays, the event provided a first hand insight into the impact the SAZ / Positive Futures can have on young people and communities, as well as demonstrating the key role they have to play in recruiting the sports leaders for the 2012 Olympics and beyond. Funders and strategic partners also highlighted the importance of partnership working and multi-agency delivery.

 

22 February 2007: SAZ Director attends Guns and Gangs Summit.
Brian Dickens was invited by the Prime Minister Tony Blair to attend the summit at No. 10 Downing Street. A ten minute slot was given for him to talk about the intervention and engagement programmes developed by the SAZ on both on the Aylesbury Estate and at the old Lillian Baylis school site. This is a huge tribute to the success of the SAZ and its partnership work. 

8 February 2007: Leader of the Opposition, David Cameron MP visited Old Lilian Baylis School.
Leader of the Opposition, David Cameron MP visited Old Lilian Baylis School accompanied by Hugo Swire MP (Shadow Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport) and Hugh Robertson MP (Shadow Minister for Sport and the Olympics). Several schools in the vicinity brought groups of students down to take part in the variety of activities that were available which included: basketball, table tennis, boxing training, football and keep fit.

The main points emphasised to David Cameron by Kate Hoey MP and the SAZ Director was the importance of having a base like the Lillian Baylis old School which allowed the local community to deliver ongoing participation and engagement programmes through sport, physical activity, educational training and employment possibilities to its own community.
