Sport Action Zones were set up by Sport England in 2000 in response to recommendations from Central Government. They were designed to address the lack of sports activities and facilities in some of the most socially and economically deprived areas of the country and to bring the benefits of sport and physical activity to these communities.
Since the SAZ began operating more than 6,000 people have attended one or more of the many programmes delivered and local sports and community groups have benefited from the partnerships we have forged.
Sport England exists to sustain and increase participation in community sport. It is a non-departmental public body and Lottery distributor. Our ambition is to get two million people participating more in sport by 2012. We do this by promoting, advising and investing in community sport.
